The Caring Club House operates much like a residential home with ongoing expenses such as utility bills, maintenance expenses and provisions that will help make our guests as comfortable as possible during their stay. Guests are asked for a donation of $10 per person and $3 for each additional guest per family per night. Your generous donation will help pay these utilities and help furnish the house with needed items.  With your help, our guests will enjoy a convenient, comfortable and affordable place to stay during their medical situation. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay.

Patient Rights

As a patient at Prairie lakes Healthcare System, you have rights that we are committed to protecting. You also have responsibilities, and understanding them will help you make decisions about your care that are best for you. 

Health Status

You have the right to: 

  • Receive complete and current information concerning your diagnosis, treatment, and any known prognosis. 
  • Be told of realistic care alternatives when hospital care is no longer appropriate.

Care Planning & Treatment

You have the right to: 

  • Reasonable, informed participation in the decisions involving your care. 
  • Refuse any participation in experimental studies or research/educational projects affecting your care. 
  • Be informed of who is responsible for authorizing and performing procedures or treatment. 

You will not be subject to any procedure without your voluntary, competent, and understanding consent.

Refusal of Treatment

You have the right to: 

  • Refuse treatment to the extent permitted by law.

When refusal of treatment by you or your legally authorized representative prevents the provision of appropriate care in accordance with professional standards, the relationship with you may be terminated upon reasonable notice. 

Advanced Directive

You have the right to: 

  • Give directions about your wishes for medical care or to designate another person(s) to make medical decisions on your behalf. 

Personal Safety

You have the right to: 

  • Privacy during medical treatments and other care. 
  • Be examined in surroundings designed to make sure you have reasonable visual and auditory privacy. 
  • Have a person of your own gender present during certain parts of a physical examination, treatment, or procedure performed by a healthcare provider of the opposite sex. 

Personal Safety

You have the right to: 

  • Expect reasonable safety where hospital practices and environment are concerned. 
  • Be free from all forms of abuse or harassment. 
  • Be placed in protective privacy when it is considered necessary for personal safety. 

Confidentiality

You have the right to: 

  • Confidentiality of all records and communications concerning your health history and treatment to the extent provided by law. 
  • Access information in your clinical record within a reasonable time. 
  • Refuse to talk with or see anyone not officially connected with the hospital, including visitors or people officially connected with the hospital, but not directly involved in your care. 
  • Expect any discussion or consultation involving your case will be conducted discreetly, and that people not directly involved in your care will not be present without your permission. 

Grievance Process

A patient representative is available to make your visit to Prairie lakes Hospital as positive as possible. The patient representative can help patients, families, or visitors with concerns, problems, or complaints by explaining hospital policies and procedures and listening to suggestions. The patient representative can be reached at 1-605-882-7672. You may also contact the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care at 605-336-3505 or the South Dakota Department of Health at 1-800-738-2301.

Patient Responsibilities

As a patient, you have the responsibility to: 

  • Provide to the best of your knowledge, accurate and complete information about present complaints, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications, and other health-related matters. 
  • Report unexpected changes in your condition to your healthcare provider. 
  • Make it known if you don’t clearly understand a possible course of action and what is expected of you. 
  • Follow the treatment plan recommended by your healthcare provider. 

On the day of your procedure, you will report at an assigned time communicated to you before your procedure date. You will be asked to present your insurance or Medicare ID card and complete registration.

After registering at the admitting desk, you will be directed to the waiting area and a nurse will call for you at the appropriate time. If you wish, a family member or friend may stay with you during the admitting process.

Once in your room, anesthesia will talk with you to review your medical history, assess your physical condition and discuss anesthesia options best suited for you. An IV will be started to give you fluids and later any necessary medications. An operating room nurse will be in to visit with you to complete the surgical verification process prior to your transportation to the surgical suite.

Following surgery, you may spend a short time in the recovery room or go directly back to the same-day area depending on the type of surgery and anesthesia given. Parents of young children and caretakers of special needs patients are allowed in the recovery room at a time determined appropriate by the staff. For privacy reasons, other visitors are usually not allowed in the recovery room. You will be reunited with your family in your hospital room or step-down area when you have recovered from the effects of anesthesia.

About 600 babies are welcomed into the world at Prairie Lakes Hospital each year. We specialize in making the birthing experience happy and memorable for everyone involved. Our Obstetric Services staff of skilled professionals not only care for you and your baby during your labor experience, but provide free education to new parents before and after the baby is born.

All-in-One Birthing Suites

Prairie Lakes Healthcare System's birth program is based on the concept of one-to-one caring for mother and baby. Operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our ten all-in-one birthing suites are specially equipped to accommodate the entire labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum (LDRP) process. This creates a relaxed atmosphere where parents can welcome their new child in a comfortable setting. Beyond that, the spacious room has these amenties:

  • Sleeper sofa
  • Recliner
  • Rocking chair
  • Refrigerator
  • TV 
  • Private bathroom with a whirlpool tub

One-to-One Nursing

When you arrive at the hospital, one nurse will be assigned to stay with you through the process of labor and delivery. The nurse will assure that your needs are met and that you have the support you need. Filling out a birth plan form allows our care teams to know what your preferences are for your labor and delivery so we can provide you with the best personalized birth experience.

Online Refills

The Prairie Lakes Campus Pharmacy offers an online prescription management system. Through Refillrx.com, patients may register for an account and request prescription refills online 24/7.

Benefits of setting up an account:

  • View your prescription profile (medications, dates ordered, etc.)
  • View status of your medications (refillable, not-refillable, etc.)
  • Send online refill requests directly to the Campus Pharmacy
  • View and print information on medications
  • Have a reminder e-mail sent to you when a prescription is due for refill
  • Manage your entire family’s prescriptions with one account

To start using this tool, complete the following steps:

Go to www.Refillrx.com. Click the “Register” button in the upper right hand corner.

Step 1 - Find and Define us as your Pharmacy

  1. Under Pharmacy Search enter the zip code (57201) and the last four digits of pharmacy phone number (7790)
  2. Click Search for Pharmacy
  3. On the next screen click the “Select Pharmacy” button

Step 2 - Create you online accout:

  1. Enter a user name
  2. Enter a password
  3. Enter your email (optional to receive email refill reminders)
  4. Repeat password
  5. Click on the “Complete Registration” button

Step 3 - Supply your information:

  1. Scroll down to the Option #2: Supply Patient Information heading
  2. Enter the required information including one of your prescription refill numbers
  3. Click the “Search Patient Information” button
  4. You should receive a MATCH FOUND! message and will be instructed to click on the “Final Step” button, lower left corner.

You are now a registered user of RefillRx.com.

To refill a prescription:

  1. Go to Refiilrx.com
  2. Enter your Username and Password
  3. Click on “View My Prescriptions”
  4. Select the prescriptions you want refilled and submit.

A message will be sent to the Campus Pharmacy to fill the prescription.

Room Service

You can order what you want, when you want - just by picking up the phone. The staff at Prairie Lakes can provide patients and their guests well-balanced, nutritious meals every day.

To Order Room Service:

  • Select from options provided on the menu in each room
  • Pick up the phone, dial 6368 and place an order with Nutritional Services
  • Wait for a specially prepared meal to be delivered to your room

If you have any dietary restrictions, be sure to keep them in mind while ordering. Guest payments are collected at the time of service.

Bedside Report

What is bedside report?

Nurses changing shifts confer with one another to ensure continuity of patient care. This is done at the patient’s bedside so the patient and family can be involved.

How long will bedside report last?

Individualized reports last around 2 to 4 minutes per patient.

Why should I participate in bedside report?

Bedside report allows the nurse and patient an opportunity to: 

  • Share information
  • Ask questions
  • Plan individualized care that the patient requires and deserves
